Honk! Honk! Honk! zoooooooooom, screeeeeeeeeeeeech "Hmm! I hold them all in contempt foolish kenyan driver" Some punk decides to jump the lights and heads straight for me I run for the kerb as the car cruises past, "the lights are red you idiot" I mumble in anger. I spot a manyanga [pimped minibus with nice flashy colours and loud music] for my route on the innermost lane, I jump back onto the road racing toward my matatu dodging oncoming traffic ignoring the angry hooting and shouts from irate drivers, "these cartoons are hooting at me and I have no intention of boarding their cars", I start trotting sideways speeding up to match the accelerating matatu, I get hold of the rail at the door and swing through the door and into the matatu, I trot down the alley to the back and take a seat. With all these new rules I buckle up.
We race down the road speeding and swerving through the lanes the driver insults a pedestrian while his tout heckles other drivers, I smile at least it was not me. The tout[conductor] at the door is busy banging on the side and signaling his driver to switch lanes while trying to get drivers on the left hand lane to let him through, his driver takes the cue and swerves the matatu wildly into the lane and races down the road, and once again blowing his horn, Honk! Honk! Honk!. I am feeling sleepy and no amount of loud music or noise will keep me awake..................
I am suddenly awake don't ask how, I wake take a few glances out the left window then the right window my mind is racing as it rebuilds the images as we cruise past buildings and people, yep im nearing my destination. I stand up and walk to the front of the matatu and ask the tout to let me alight, he shouts to his driver getting him to slow down the speeding matatu without stopping, I stand at the door the matatu still cruising I get hold of the two rails at the door and swing out the, door left foot first leaning backward as I slow down from the momentum.
Sigh! I miss those days.
